Bison Fun Facts!

The correct name for buffalo is American Bison

French explorers called them ‘boeufs,’ because they reminded them of water buffalo from Africa (wikipedia)

Plains bison numbered in the millions in the seventeenth century.

Woodland Bison, which still exist in Canada, are bison that live in woods. They are much larger than Plains Bison.

Average male Bison weighs 2,000lbs. which is also one ton.

Average female Bison weighs 1,000 to 1,300 lbs.

Bison can run 30 MPH

Both cows and bulls have horns and beards. Horns and beards are used to sweep away snow in the winter to feed on grass underneath.

Bison Hooves are shaped like a heart with a space in the center. Because of their shape, hooves aerate the soil and encourage the spread of a plants seed as they walk. This is how they left a mile wide path of soil behind after they came through the open range and it rejuvenated the area.
